Hey Guys,
My question that Mrs. Koning gave me is this: Do you think Juana is wise? Why or why not?
Here is my answer to this question:
First off, I think Juana is the best character in the Pearl. She is a faithful wife even when Kino hits her, she still loves him and understands why he did what he did. She proves she is wise even from the start of the book when her baby gets stung by a scorpion. Right after, she begins to suck the poison out of the wound and when they are on the beach, she puts seaweed on it. She is wise in how she knew what to do at that moment when most of us would be so devastated we wouldn't act so quickly. Another example in the book when Juana is wise, is when Kino is attacked the first time in their shack. "This thing is evil," she cried harshly. "This pearl is like a sin! It will destroy us," and her voice rose shrilly. "Throw it away, Kino. Let us break it between stones. Let us bury it and forget the place. Let us throw it back into the sea. It has brought evil. Kino, my husband, it will destroy us." (p.37) Juana is wiser than her husband here because she is more aware of what could happen to them. Another example of her wisdom is when she goes out into the night with the pearl and tries to get rid of it, but then her husband comes and hurts her to get it back. Juana is very wise considering her people is quite ignorant of things. These are my opinions, leave comments and tell me what you think about this.

OF COURSE JUANA IS WISE!!!!!!!!!!!
^^
I mean, she was the one that knew that the pearl is dangerous so she asked him to toss it away like that! SNAP!
But, Kino didn't, he was proud, and weird!!! He was full of arrogance...
What do you think???
I mean, you can see that Juana was the wisest... What about you>>>???<<<
^^
AND VISIT MINE!!!
^^
yeah, you are right Chan. Juana was the practical one of the two. i guess the strong desire of trying to make things better for his family made him do things he wouldn't normally do.
Yeah, her want to make the family safe, and the want for Kino to make his family BETTEER... NOT BUTTER>>>???<<<
^^
It was HIS desire not HER desire. all she really wanted was her son to get better in the first place. that is what she wanted. she didn't really care that much about the other stuff. at least not as much as Kino did.
I love Juana! She's not Ignorant like Kino (about the pearl) and doesn't get caught up in there good fortune. She isn't blinded by the Pearl. Even right after Kino finds it she pretends not to notice cause she knows it's bad to want a thing too much.

I think that Juana is really wise! Isn't it amazing that she didn't feel any anger for him after he beat her! I would have been slow in forgiving him for that! She is not only wise but she is also kind and forgiving! (I guess that being forgiving is being wise!)
i like Jauna. She's smart. You can't blame Kino for doing what he can to make life better for his family.

i guess it's easier for guys to understand why kino did what he did. I agree with you, Bethy that it would take a long time to forgive him. i guess when you really love a person, you don't feel as much anger as you would think...
Juana is very wise!!!
she is way smarter than Kino!!!
she tries to break it and throw it away!!!
If it was me i would sell the pearl for 1000 pesos...
Then there would be no more evil in their lives...
Just think...imagine how awful kino would feel...he has so many regreats now by the end of the book. he wouldn't have lost is child, his boat, his house and his honour.
I don't think that she is thinking logical
She shouldn't have tried to throw it away
SHe could have just told Kino that they should leave the town and sold it some where else
Kino was just trying to prove himself if he would have gotten rid of the pearl he he would have lost every thing that it is to be a man
i think juana is sort of wise. she understands the pearls evil and resists it. she even tries to get rid of it.
