Hello!
Our language arts class is now reading "The Pearl." A question I have for you all to answer is, What is John Steinbeck's view of God and life?
My answer: I believe that John Steinbeck views God as just sitting back and watching everyone go through life without so much as lifting a toe. That is basically what he states in his book, The Pearl. When the main character in The Pearl is about to eat his breakfast, he sees an ant struggling to get free from a trap. He says that Kino sat back feeling god-like as he watched it struggle. I can't help but think that Steinbeck felt the same way. From what Mrs. Konning told us about him, he didn't seem like a very happy person. He ended up divorcing his wife and never having time for her. I think because of this, he might have thought that God let it happen and let him go through those hard times and he didn't do a thing for him. It is very interesting to me, because Ernest Hemmingway and John Steinbeck both had problems in life, and the wrote such amazing novellas.
Just for you all to remember, these are just my opinions, so don't think of them as facts. Thanx!

Ya, that's like what Mrs. Koning said in class. I think it's sad...
Koko
He's like making fun of Christianity...
Kino and Juana
They don't know wich god is real so they just pray to every god just to be safe
They don't know that God is a jelous God
I can't believe he doesn't believe that God wants to help and is waiting for you to ask. You know Ask, Seek, Knock?
What do you believe the book would be like if Kino and Juana believed in God and believed that he cares for us?
Good comments guys! thanx!! i think that we would all be miserable without God. Like whenever i'm depressed, if i didn't have God to turn to, i would not see the point of living. that is how it is sometimes, and i can't imagine what it would be like without him.
kinda ditz????? ur totally ditz!!!!!!1
oh my gosh, bob!!! you are sooo random!!! stay on topic!
He believes in luck and doesn't seem to have a deep view of God. He thinks he's like us looking at ant hills and just watching us suffer, and yet that's what so many people believe... deceiving the gods, magic and all. It's really sad! I'm glad we have the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, Anna
I don't understand though why he divorced, and I don't understand why that he had three wives...
You see, he understands the Christian Religion as weird...
I think that he made a mistake...
^^
I wouldn't say that Steinbeck just sits back and whachs everything go by. I think his message is more of a "Grin and Bare it" sorta thing. Even though his suicide is a complete opposite of what he beleives, he still said that. Like I said, No opionion or beleif of man will stand for long without the Truth. Copyright.

Sorry about that! I meant about Hemigway! Dang, I' dumb!

It's also really sad how Kino and Juana don't know what God to believe! Does this maybe reflect what Steinback thinks?!
You aren't dumb, Micah
Steinbeck was a weird guy! I agree that he seems like someone who would just let life go on. i think also that, though he was like that, in the face of saving something precious to him, he would act without hesitation. That makes him selfsish really.
